Historically, the principal area of interest at the Harvard Electronic Music Studio (HEMS) had been live, electronic processing in performance with acoustic instruments. Eschewing the monolithic and stationary quality of many electronic music facilities, modularity, mobility and flexibility have been enduring guideposts for the development of the studio since 1972 when Ivan Tcherepnin became its director. With the construction of the Harvard Computer Music Center (HCMC) by Mario Davidovsky and Sean Varah the focus shifted towards the teaching of analog studio techniques within the computer realm. In both cases, the primary goal was the service of technology for use by composers. This is still the guiding principle for the Harvard University Studio for Electroacoustic Composition (HUSEAC).
